Dealing With Gift Projection in the Church

Often church leaders can project their own spiritual gift, urging everyone in the church to serve as they do. Yet God designed the church with different gifts—evangelists, shepherds, exhorters,  servants, etc. Forcing uniformity creates frustration. Instead, leaders should release believers to serve in their unique callings, allowing the whole body to flourish in unity. Chapter 14, “Mobilising Soulwinners,” from Ken’s book Building the Church that God Wants.  Used with permission.

Many church leaders can fall into the trap of unintentionally pressuring believers to serve God according to their own particular gifting—expecting everyone to evangelise, intercede, or counsel etc. But Scripture shows the church as one body with many parts, each uniquely equipped by God. Forcing people into a single mould brings imbalance and discouragement. Instead, wise leaders help believers discover and develop their distinct gifts, making room for diversity within the body. When every member serves in their God-given place, the church reflects Christ’s design and grows in health, unity, and mission. Gift projection must be recognised and avoided for true fruitfulness.
